FA Cup 1992

It's 28 years since Norwich City were last in the FA Cup quarter-finals and what a night to remember it was. Following a goalless draw at the Dell eleven days earlier the Canaries faced Southampton for a place in the semi-finals. The Saints managed by Ian Branfoot were a difficult team to beat and went into the match with only one defeat in 15 and without conceding a goal in 5. However despite not scoring in their previous 4 matches Dave Stringer's boys had not lost to Southampton in their last 5 meetings and had beaten them 2-1 at Carrow Road in the league only a month earlier.

On a dreadful pitch in the middle of March this Southampton team, as well as being one of the dirtiest teams the Canaries have ever played was also one of the ugliest with the likes of Terry Hurlock, Matthew Le Tissier and Iain Dowie in their starting 11. The Canaries included a 19 year old Chris Sutton up front in his breakthrough season at the club. Sutton's early appearances had been at centre-half before he was converted to a striker by Dave Stringer.

Not surprisingly the overly physical Saints tried to batter Norwich and by half-time referee Gerald Ashby had already booked Alan Shearer, Tim Flowers and Jason Dodd. Just before the interval Neil "Razor" Ruddock silenced the Norwich faithful by heading in Le Tissier's corner at the near post. Ruddock later went on to play for Liverpool and once for England but is regarded as a bit of a joke now due to his weight problems and regular TV appearances on reality shows. Ruddock was a tough tackling midfielder 28 years ago and didn't score that many goals. Indeed his goal at Carrow Road was his only goal during the whole of the 1991/92 season.

Despite being a goal down the Canaries had gone close through an early Sutton effort and Rob Newman's shot had brought a fine save out of Tim Flowers. However City deservedly equalised in the second half when Rob Newman netted following Sutton's assist.

With Norwich now growing in confidence the Saints began to lose their heads a bit and Matthew Le Tissier's rash challenge on Robert Fleck resulted in a early bath for Southampton's second highest ever goalscorer behind former Canary Mick Channon.

Although they had the extra man the Canaries couldn't find a winner and Southampton were grateful for forcing extra-time. During the first period of extra-time City were given another helping hand by the sorry Saints when Barry Horne was sent off for stamping on a Norwich player.

Tim Flowers was having a good game for Southampton and kept out efforts by substitute Darren Beckford and Chris Sutton. With the minutes ticking away Norwich couldn't get the ball in the net and the unthinkable (penalties) looked likely.

Newman and Goss then went close. Alan Shearer of all people had to clear off the line. The Canary faithful were running out of patience but thankfully out of nothing, Chris Sutton diverted a header past Tim Flowers following Gossy's mishit shot. Glen Cockerill protested that Sutton was offside but he was booked and Carrow Road went mental. Norwich City were in the FA Cup semi-finals for the second time in four seasons.
